About OpenFlow

The OpenFlow Switching Consortium was created in 2008 to evangelize and support OpenFlow. Although hosted at Stanford University, our goal is for OpenFlow to be owned by the community – for the betterment of research and innovation in networking.

The Stanford OpenFlow Team

The OpenFlow Switch Consortium is a group of university researchers and network administrators. Membership is free, and open to anyone who doesn’t work for a network equipment vendor (to prevent conflict of interest). Our goal is to promote research and innovation in networking, particularly in the networks we use everyday in our universities. The consortium proposes that the Ethernet switches and routers we deploy in our universities – in wiring closets, basements and computer centers – should support the OpenFlow feature. OpenFlow allows a researcher to experiment with new functionality in their own network; for example, to add a new routing protocol, a new management technique, a novel packet processing algorithm, or even – eventually – alternatives to IP.
